The Eyes behind the Eye

Frontal view of camera lens

Through the eyes of the average consumer a camera operators responsibilities might only be restricted to just their ability to function and use a camera. This common understanding only covers the basics of what actually goes into being able to do this job.

The importance of camera men and women to not only their industry, but to everyday consumers of any type of film. Their ability to use the skills of what they’ve learned throughout countless times of filming is what enhances, the production as a whole. Ross Bruglio, an experienced freelance camera operator, he’s the second camera angle used throughout the Docu-Series “Undiscovered Gems”.

Although Ross’s career in the broadcasting industry hasn’t been long he believes this is one profession that’ allows for him to build. “ I genuinely love my job, not just because I get to be around sports but also because I genuinely love the process of collecting the small pieces that get put together to create stories ”. What Bruglio is referring to is the process of filming content footage as well as B Roll footage, and using that film to create a final project.

B roll is verbiage used by those familiar with film and it refers to the video captured that can tell your story without you having to say anything, an example of this would be a video playing with its sound muted but still being able to know what’s going on.

Jacob Gowan is another seasoned camera operator who works at Stetson University on their ESPN broadcast team. Before being full time at Stetson Gowan was a freelance camera operator for 8 years. He finds the creative aspects he can bring to videography is where he finds enjoyment in similar ways to Bruglio. ”I like the creativity aspect of it where I can use my knowledge of the sport to offer the best shot to the viewer.”

Although camera operators like Bruglio and Gowan are at work filming during events, such as the sporting events, they are still fans enjoying the event through the lens of camera. Not only are operators trying to capture what looks good by official standards but their also trying to film, what they would want to see as the consumer.

Although both examples of these camera operators were mostly experienced in covering sports the same can be said for any camera operator throughout all forms of entertainment. The eyes behind the “eye”of a camera is important because their eyes and creativity are what capture the moments relived in yours.
