Noise Silenced: Deion Sanders may have a new job, but the work done at JSU speaks for itself.

On December 3, 2022 Deion Sanders was announced as Colorado University’s 28th Head football Coach. During his tenure at Jackson State University, Sanders accumulated a 27-5 overall record in 3 seasons. Sanders was also responsible for successfully recruiting the nations number 1 high school recruit, in Travis Hunter . The tigers ended their 2022 regular season campaign with a 12-0 record, the schools first undefeated season in school history. This coming in a win in the SWAC Championship, the programs 2nd in a row.

While some could point at Sanders on the field success at JSU as being the main catalyst for this new opportunity, others may look at what he did off the field to build the JSU football program as a form of certification. During Sanders time with the program, the city of Jackson, Mississippi had an on going water crisis in the state's capitol. The social awareness and call by Sanders not only helped his team, but allowed for the entire city of Jackson to gain Federal aid.

Sanders has received backlash over the move from some of his supporters at fellow Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). For many they’ve felt Sanders “sold out” Jackson State for a better paycheck. Others believed he failed to reach his promise to elevate all HBCU’s on a collective exposure and competitive level.

While at Jackson State Deion Sanders and the JSU football team helped bring nearly 30 million dollars to the city of Jackson, Mississippi’s economy . In 2022 ESPN’s College Gamedaycame to Jackson, Mississippi. It was only the shows 2nd time visiting an HBCU in it's 36th season on air.

Alec Carr is a Quarterback at Greensboro Community College located in Greensboro, North Carolina. Before his time at Greensboro Carr was also a student athlete at both Stetson University (pwi) and North Carolina A&T (hbcu). Carr understands the excitement surrounding the Sanders hire as well as the backlash. On a special episode of the Glass Ceiling Podcast, Carr discussed reasons why he felt Sanders accomplishments, are already sustainable.

Despite opinions on the move, there is a gleaming hope by the Colorado fan base that Sanders will match the success he had at Jackson State. By turning a team that went 1-11 into champions.
