One of the greatest artists of all time is Zora Neale Hurston. Hurston is who best known for her literary works on the experience of the African American Woman, is seen as a literary pioneer. Her work was most significant because it was the first official collecting and interpretation of African American Culture.
Hurston grew up to become an Icon in the backyard of Orlando, FL and in the one of the most historical towns in the United States. It is there that the Zora Neale Hurston Museum of Fine Arts can be found.
Eatonville, Florida is the first established town by freed African American slaves in the United States of America. The town gave birth to and raised some of the greatest African American minds to date, and it continues to be a location that attracts visitors from around the world to see the legacy of Hurston and Eatonville.
The Zora Neale Hurston Museum of Fine Arts is a museum dedicated to the late authors memory, and serves as a representation of Hurston’s mission to provide a place where African Americans can view Black art “in the heart of the community”.
Like African American culture throughout history, the content found within the Museum changes overtime. Since it was established in 1990 the Museum has housed dozens of African American Artists and their depiction of Black art. Artists such as Benny Andrews, Deborah Willis, and Samella Lewis have all graced the Museum’s walls.
Now the visual artist, Granville Carrol’s display “In the Finite Infidelity” takes its place on the walls. The display represents Carrol’s take of how humans understand the universe. The portraits illustrate a deeper representation of searching from within and sealing deeper meaning. However, each portraits true meaning depends on the individual themselves. Even constantly changing meanings occur to those consistently around the paintings.
Millard Livatt, a Museum tour guide, discussed the changing messages. “Every time I look at this I get something new“, Livatt insisted. “They all tie in together somehow, so I think it’s biblical in my opinion.”
Hurston’s legacy could be seen as the great prices of literature she wrote throughout her years such as “Their eyes were watching God”. Her legacy could be constructed as the founder of modern day Afrofuturism. Regardless after visiting this museum this trailblazer’s legacy resides within.
